Beyond Sampling: Welcome to the World of Elastic Audio. The VP-9000 VariPhrase Processor is nothing short of a revolution for music production, performance and remixing. As the world's first elastic audio processor, this amazing rackmount tool lets you alter the pitch, timing, feel, inflection and character of recorded vocals and audio phrases in real time, with complete MIDI control, for the first time in history... *VariPhrase technology patent pending. Thanks to VariPhrase, remixers are no longer forced to adapt their music to the way a vocal or sampled loop was performed. Even more amazing is the VP-9000’s ability to automatically sync multiple loops and phrases to a single key and tempo using MIDI clock. This make it possible to sync an entire set of loops to a vinyl record—even varying the pitch—by using the DJ-2000 Professional DJ Mixer’s onboard BPM counter with MIDI clock translation capability. Particularly effective with vocals, the VP-9000 offers several time-saving features. For example, it is no longer necessary to spend time perfecting background vocals with singers. Simply capture the lead vocal with the VP-9000 and create convincing harmonies in real time using a MIDI keyboard or sequencer. You can even re-touch a vocal performance to correct mistakes in pitch or phrasing. Making Audio Work for You The VP-9000 VariPhrase Processor is an amazing new audio processing tool that gives you independent realtime control of pitch, time, and formant — making audio work for you. Here are a few examples of how the VP-9000 can save time and take audio processing far beyond existing sampler technology. match multiple audio phrases with different keys and tempos to a new Eliminates Multisampling user-defined key and tempo. Trying Traditionally, when sampling an different phrase combinations can instrument, it has been necessary to be done as many times as desired; record the same sound at different altering the pitch, key, and tempo pitches in order to play it back from the middle of a phrase is as across a range of keys. This process, easy as moving the pitch bend lever, known as multisampling, can be greatly enhancing the “playability” very time consuming and memoryof audio phrase samples. With intensive. Because the VP-9000 can VariPhrase, it’s possible to make adjust for formant shifting, it is literally any audio phrase work with now possible to play back a single another—you can even Groove sample across a wider range of keys Quantize an audio sample to make while retaining the original sample’s a straight rhythm loop swing, or tone, envelope, and tempo. This sync it to MIDI clock without makes the user sampling process affecting pitch. far less complicated than a sampler. Unbelievable Phrase Sync While some samplers are capable of matching tempos of multiple phrases, none can instantly match the key as well. The VP-9000 is the first audio processor that can instantly Non-Destructive Timestretch With VariPhrase technology, it is possible to timestretch/compress any audio source while maintaining the original sound quality. Unlike other products that alter the original audio waveform, the VP-9000 Understanding VariPhrase Elastic Audio Processing Capture, Train, and Play VariPhrase is the first technology to make audio “elastic,” allowing it to be controlled dynamically via MIDI. The secret is the independent control of pitch, time, and formant. This allows audio to be controlled non-destructively using realtime MIDI messages and without changing the original sound quality. Using the VP-9000 consists of capturing audio, training it to be “elastic,” and playing it back. Before a sample can be played, it must be encoded through a “wave training” process using one of three methods —each optimized for different sound sources as shown in the table below. With VariPhrase, a single sample is all it takes to “train” audio to work in any way desired—from natural to extraordinary. As such, the VP-9000 is the first audio processor that allows for user sampling in the true sense of the word. In contrast, traditional samplers merely play back static CD-ROM sounds or user-created samples, offering much less flexibility. Phrase Mapping, on the other hand, can assign multiple samples to a key range for realtime phrase jamming and resampling. Events can be changed successively using a footswitch, and since all mapping is done without splicing the raw samples, users can switch between Normal, Event, and Phrase Mapping modes at will. performs its timestretch/ compression as realtime MIDI control, leaving the original audio sample untouched. This nondestructive form of timestretch enables the VP-9000 to achieve results that were never before possible. Controls Audio Like MIDI The VP-9000 can make audio phrases behave like MIDI data being triggered from a keyboard or sequencer. This makes it possible to do things like pitch bend a chord being played from a single sample without any time differences between the different notes—perfect for creating realistic brass falls. Even a simple melody can be manipulated into something entirely different, complete with harmonies, and without destroying its formant. Melody and pitch bending can be played with a percussion loop without changing its tempo. With VariPhrase technology, audio phrases behave like a tone on a synthesizer, capable of being played and manipulated in any way desired—all non-destructively in real time, and without distorting the original sound’s properties. While Solo encoding is designed for monophonic sources, the encoded audio can be played back polyphonically; and because formant is processed, there is no distortion of the original sound—even when played at different pitches. Although Backing and Ensemble do not process formant, their realtime nature is still superior to traditional timestretch techniques. The encoded audio can be Groove Quantized or adjusted for pitch/time instantly as many times as desired. Encoding Type VP-9000 Key Map Modes Normal keymode Event Map keymode Phrase Map keymode VP-9000 Basic Configuration Unbelievable Audio Functions Flexible Playback Modes The VP-9000 gives users access to VariPhrase technology in a convenient two-space rackmount module. Up to six encoded audio phrases or three stereo-sampled and encoded phrases can be played back simultaneously with each phrase consisting of vocals, music and drums working together. In addition, users are free to resample repeatedly, complete with onboard effects. With its standard 8MB memory, the VP-9000 can record up to 25 seconds stereo or 50 seconds mono, and can be expanded with optional SIMM’s to 136MB of wave memory, providing 7 minutes stereo or 14 minutes mono maximum recording time*. In addition to realtime control of pitch, time, and formant, the VP-9000 includes several other amazing audio functions that are sure to blow minds. With the Robot function, it is possible to equalize the pitch of Solo-encoded audio. For example, a vocal melody could be captured, and using Robot, all notes could be set to the same pitch—allowing the user to create their own melodies by adjusting the pitch in real time. Rhythm loops can be made to swing using the VP-9000’s four Groove Quantize templates, or use the Human Feel function to make a single sample sound like it was performed by multiple players. A choice of playback modes allows for increased flexibility in controlling phrase samples. Retrigger is similar to what samplers and synthesizers do; the waveform returns to its initial start point each time a key is depressed. Time Sync (when key assign is set to Poly) allows up to all six voices to be played according to the first voice. This means that if a vocal line was triggered on one key at the verse, and upon reaching the chorus a second key was depressed to add harmony, the second key would play back at the chorus rather than the verse. And Legato (when key assign is set to Mono) is designed to allow monophonic playback without the waveform returning to its initial start point for natural legato. *Maximum time for a single sample is fixed to 25 seconds stereo or 50 seconds mono. value formant value Solo Pitch, Time, Formant pitch Backing Pitch, Time For rhythmic audio sources such as drum loops.
