What is OCR? What is Optical Character Recognition (OCR)? OCR, or "text recognition", is the electronic translation of a document image into text. It allows you to edit an otherwise static document. You get text that you can copy and paste, search or edit. WHY ABBYY PRODUCTS? ABBYY FineReader is a powerful OCR software which converts information trapped in documents into accessible, searchable and editable content. This allows you to save a lot of time and effort when electronically processing or archiving documents. Converting paper documents, images or PDFs takes minimum time and effort and the final recognised document looks just like the original. You will never need to retype a document again! Increased Productivity Retyping content from documents wastes time and effort. ABBYY products reduce manual work and make employees more efficient. Access to Information Digital documents should be searchable. Simply scanning a document is not enough. Without searchable text, how can you find it later? How does ABBYY FineReader OCR work? STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3 DOC XLS PDF PDF Scan/Open a document "Read" the document Save /Send the document Instead of manually retyping and re-formatting your documents ABBYY FineReader does all the work: it analyses the entire document structure and detects individual elements, such as text, images and tables. Each character is compared to a set of “patterns” to detect which letter it represents. Each word is compared to the words in a set of dictionaries to ensure even higher recognition accuracy. Thanks to the unique ADRT® (Adaptive Document Recognition Technology) ABBYY FineReader understands the properties of all pages and their relation to each other. The layout of each page with all formatting elements such as tables or columns will be exactly reproduced. The logical structure of multipage documents will be reconstructed, headers and footers, footnotes and page numbers will appear as native Microsoft Word formatting elements. Thanks to ABBYY’s award-winning OCR technology the recognition accuracy of ABBYY FineReader can reach up to 99,8% on standard documents.* Ease-of-Use ABBYY products are designed with an intuitive and easy to use interface which gives a step-by-step guide through the OCR process and helps optimise recognition results. Recognised Experience ABBYY operates in more than 130 countries. In the last 20+ years ABBYY technologies received more than 200 awards from leading IT publications and industry groups. The ADRT® Advantage ABBYY products intelligently analyse the document as an entity and reproduce not just text, but special formatting such as headers, footers, footnotes and page numbers in native Microsoft® formats. Leading language support ABBYY's text recognition products support up to 189 recognition languages. * OCR recognition results depend on the quality of the document being processed.
