What is OCR? What is Optical Character Recognition (OCR)? OCR, or "text recognition", is the electronic translation of a document image into text. It allows you to edit an otherwise static document. You get text that you can copy and paste, search or edit.

Instead of manually retyping and re-formatting your documents ABBYY FineReader does all the work: it analyses the entire document structure and detects individual elements, such as text, images and tables. Each character is compared to a set of “patterns” to detect which letter it represents. Each word is compared to the words in a set of dictionaries to ensure even higher recognition accuracy. Thanks to the unique ADRT® (Adaptive Document Recognition Technology) ABBYY FineReader understands the properties of all pages and their relation to each other. The layout of each page with all formatting elements such as tables or columns will be exactly reproduced. The logical structure of multipage documents will be reconstructed, headers and footers, footnotes and page numbers will appear as native Microsoft Word formatting elements. Thanks to ABBYY’s award-winning OCR technology the recognition accuracy of ABBYY FineReader can reach up to 99,8% on standard documents.*
