What is the BEST 1T SSD for mid 2012 Unibody MBP Allan Zacher
In the old days ('80's and '90's) I opened the Mac (and PC) desktop cases and replaced RAM and HD's with impunity. I only say this to let you know I'm not a complete newbie, but haven't opened the Mac Laptops)

MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012
I now want to put a 1T SSD in my 13" MBP (mid 2012) i7. Two questions:
Released June 2012, Model A1278. Intel processor with Turbo Boost, Up to 512 MB DDR5 Video RAM
1) is it dangerous? (in the sense of damaging my computer), like what percentage of people "hurt" some internal component creating a trip to an apple authorized service center and much larger expenses? 2) I have scoured your site and for pure SSD's find 500G at the largest, Samsung 1T EVO is available on Amazon for about $450 which seems to have good ratings. Is this the best? What might be even better?
ssd

upgrade hd to ssd

CHOSEN SOLUTION POSTED: JUNE 8, 2014
Given the price of SSD are still quite high for equally sized storage as a standard HD. I would recommend going with a SSHD instead.
Dan
Here you're getting the benefits of a lower cost device, yet the benefits of the SSD caching. While not quite as fast an SSD, the difference is not enough to warrant going with SSD given the cost difference and limited storage sizes (2.5" 1.5 & 2TB SSHD drives are coming soon).

Self employed contract While your system ('11 models and newer) has a fast SATA I/O port - SATA III (6.0 Gb/s). I don't find storage worker
I/O as the area that holds back most peoples performance. I would add in more RAM as the bigger win here.

Here's the spec sheet on the Seagate SSHD drive Laptop SSHD Note it can work with SATA I, II & III. We use the 1TB drive and have had great success with it (approximately 150 systems).

I tried both Crucial Micron M500 and Samsung 840 EVO.. They work just fine. Samsung EVO seems faster though. Just make sure to enable trim.

Thank you all! These are great responses. I will STUDY the information prior to opening the case (watch videos where appropriate). and I will probably go with SamSung 840 EVO. I will review how to enable "trim". Thanks folks!! June 10, 2014 by Allan Zacher
The only issue you'll face here is Yosemite has signing so TRIM Enabler won't work without turning signing off. The good news from WWDC is El Capitan will have a way to support 3rd party SSD TRIM services! For now hold off with TRIM. June 15 by Dan
Hi guys! What about a SAMSUNG 850 Pro? Anyone tried it? June 15 by Alessandro Marengo
I see no reason why it wouldn't. Again, think about the cost factor and the systems lifespan before going to deep here. You may find going with the EVO version vs the PRO just as good here. June 15 by Dan
Hi Dan, please, could you please tell me how can I activate "signing off"? I mean, I planned to do this: 1) purchase a new SSD 2) install Yosemite on the actual HDD 3) backup it 4) clone the new SSD 5) get rid of the HDD 6) install the new SSD Is it a correct path or should I be aware of something missing? Actually, I have 10.7.5 and want 10.10 or latest. Then I'll replace HDD with SSD. What should I do to get the best from it? Thanks in advance! A. Marengo June 15 by Alessandro Marengo

If you study, not just read, the guide and comments doing damage is less likely. The SATA speed of the drive is a match, so if it fits physically I foresee no problems... Purchase the recommended tools, (every job is easier when you use the proper tools).

Thank you MacHead3! Any recommendations on which brand might be best? I see Samsung EVO drives are popular on Amazon, but not 100%, June 8, 2014 by Allan Zacher
