Please take time to read this manual thoroughly to familiarise yourself with all instructions, BEFORE beginning installation. THIS HEATER IS NOT EQUIPPED WITH A DEVICE TO CONTROL THE ROOM TEMPERATURE. DO NOT USE THIS HEATER IN SMALL ROOMS WHEN THEY ARE OCCUPIED BY PERSONS NOT CAPABLE OF LEAVING THE ROOM ON THEIR OWN, UNLESS CONSTANT SUPERVISION IS PROVIDED. CHILDREN LESS THAN 8 YEARS OLD SHOULD BE KEPT AWAY FOR THE APPLIANCE UNLESS CONTINUALLY SUPERVISED. THIS APPLIANCE CAN BE USED BY CHILDREN AGED FROM 8 YEARS AND ABOVE AND PERSONS WITH REDUCED PHYSICAL, SENSORY OR MENTAL CAPABILITIES, OR LACK OF EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE IF THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN SUPERVISION OR INSTRUCTION CONCERNING USE OF THE APPLIANCE IN A SAFE WAY AND UNDERSTAND THE HAZARDS INVOLVED. CHILDREN SHALL NOT PLAY WITH THE APPLIANCE. CLEANING AND USER MAINTENANCE SHALL NOT BE MADE BY CHILDREN. ALL WIRING AND INSTALLATION MUST BE SUPERVISED BY A SUITABLY QUALIFIED PERSON. The heater is intended for connection to fixed wiring. Installation and wiring must be in accordance with the current edition of BS.7671 (the ‘IET Wiring Regulations’) in force at the time of installation. Installations outside England and Wales must also conform to any local or appropriate regulations in effect. The protective fuse rating must NOT exceed 15A and a means for disconnection in all poles MUST BE incorporated in the fixed wiring in accordance with the Wiring Regulations. Note that the heater is double insulated, but the controller must be earthed. Only one heater may be wired to each controller. This heater is intended for high level wall mounting in industrial/commercial premises. However, it should NOT be used in corrosive atmospheres. The heater should be fixed to a wall at a minimum height of 1.8m and there MUST be a minimum gap of 150mm between the top of the heater and the ceiling. Therefore the heater should NOT be installed in areas where the ceiling height is less than 2.3m. As a general rule, fan heating is NOT recommended for rooms greater than 5.0m high. 2 11 If the heater is to be installed near an adjacent wall, the heater should be parallel to, or angled away from it, and there should be a minimum gap of 300mm between the adjacent wall and any part of the heater (see Diagram 1.0). The heater MUST NOT be mounted immediately below a fixed electrical socket outlet, neither should it be directed at any surface nearer than 1.5m. PROTECTION This heater is protected by two thermal cut-outs. TC1 being factory re-settable will operate only in the event of a major problem such as fan blades being stalled. TC2 is a cyclic device and will protect the heater in the event of the airflow being obstructed. TC2 will reset when the fault condition has been rectified. MAINTENANCE This heater is designed for a long, maintenance free, service life. The motor is fully enclosed and should require no attention. However, if the heater is located in a very dusty environment, it is recommended that any build-up of debris is removed periodically. 10 3 INSTALLING THE HEATER 1. Remove the two screws from the arm cover. Remove the arm cover (see Diagram 2.0). CONNECT TO POWER SUPPLY 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Ensure power supply is isolated and fuses are removed. Route the cable from the isolating switch to the point of the connection to the power supply Make all connections within the isolating switch in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Following all local regulations make connections at point of power supply. Make a final check to ensure all earth points are connected and all covers have been correctly replaced on the controller and isolating switch. 6. Replace all fuses, and switch on the power supply. See Diagram 1.0 for minimum clearance from floor, walls and ceiling. Make sure that the wall plate is vertical. Note: The heater will accept cable entry from the top, bottom or rear. If the rear cable entry is to be used, the cable gland can be discarded. If either top or bottom entry is required use a knife or similar sharp tool to remove the thin web of material in the threaded part of the appropriate end of the wall plate. Alternatively, the gland can be screwed into the required end and tightened with an appropriate spanner which will result in the thin web of material being removed. 5. Offer the wall plate to the wall and attach with TWO No.10 x 1.5” (or longer) round head screws in holes A and B only. DO NOT fix screw in hole C at this stage (see Diagram 2.3). 6. With the wall plate firmly attached to the wall, latch the heater to the wall plate by pushing back and down. Secure the heater to the wall/wall plate using a third No.10 x 1.5” (or longer) round head screw through hole C (see Diagram 2.4). 4 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Before cleaning, isolate the Controller completely from the power supply. Wipe the cover carefully with a damp cloth. Dry thoroughly. Ensure ventilation slots are free from obstructions at all times. Never immerse the Controller in water or other liquids. Never use solvents to clean the Controller. Apart from cleaning, no other maintenance is required. DO’S AND DON’TS  Do read all the instructions before commencing installation.  Do install the product with a means for disconnection in all poles incorporated in the fixed wiring in accordance with the wiring rules. We recommend a double pole isolating switch (Wall or Ceiling mounted).  Do make sure that the mains supply is switched off before attempting to make electrical connections or carry out any maintenance or cleaning. 9 MOUNTING THE CONTROLLER REMOVE THE COVER AND MOUNTING FRAME 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Detach the Fascia from the Mounting Frame by removing the screw covers and screws (Fig. 2a & 2b). Detach the Mounting Frame from the Wall Box by removing the two screws (Fig. 2c). Lift the Wall Box away from the plastic surround. Check that the electrical rating shown inside the controller matches the power supply. Disconnect the earth wire for the Wall Box. Make cable entry holes in the plastic and metal boxes by removing suitable knockouts (Fig. 1). MOUNTING THE WALL BOX Eye protection must be worn during all drilling and chiselling operations. Check there are no buried pipes or cables in the wall or obstructions on the outside e.g: electricity, water or gas. If surface mounting 1. 2. 3. 4. Insert suitable glands into the knockouts. Feed both cables through the glands. Fix the Wall Box and Plastic Surround to the wall using the mounting holes provided. Reconnect the earth lead to the Wall Box. 7. Make sure the mains electricity supply is off. If recess mounting 1. 2. 3. 4. Make a hole in the wall big enough for the Wall Box. Discard the Plastic Surround (Fig. F3). Insert suitable glands into the knockouts. Feed both cables through these glands. Fix the Wall Box to the wall. Ensure that the flange of the mounting frame fits flush to the finished surface of the wall (Fig. F4). 5. Reconnect the earth lead to the Wall Box. WIRE THE FAN HEATER ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS 1. Route the 3-core cable from the Heater to the Controller position. 2. Wire one end of the cable into the Heater connections as shown in Fig. F1. The unused earth cable should be carefully cut back to give maximum clearance from live connections 3. Leave the other end ready to be connected to the Controller. 4. Earthing regulations must be followed when using the metal wall box. WIRE THE CONTROLLER ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Mount the isolation switch in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Wire the Controller to the isolation switch and the Heater as shown in Fig. F1. Refit Mounting Frame to Metal Wall Box. Refit the Fascia to the Mounting Frame. Refit the Screw Covers. 8 The WHP30 Heater can now be connected to a suitable single-phase electrical supply using appropriate 3-core cable. Connect the wiring from the controller (see Diagram 2.5 and refer to the controller installation instructions that follow). If either top or bottom cable entry is required, fit the cable gland in the appropriate threaded end of the wall plate. If rear cable entry is required, the cables should project through the hole at the lower edge of the wall plate. Pass the 3-core cable through the cable gland and connect to the relevant terminals (see Diagram 2.5). WARNING: IT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT THE SCREWS IN THE TERMINAL BLOCK ARE FULLY TIGHTENED. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN THE CONNECTION OVERHEATING AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE APPLIANCE. The back nut on the cable gland should now be fully tightened to secure the supply cable. 5 8. The WHP30 Heater can now be pointed in the required direction by slackening the locking screw, aligning the heater and re-tightening the locking screw (see Diagram 2.6). WARNING: DO NOT SWITCH THE HEATER ON BEFORE REPLACING THE ARM COVER. INSTALLING THE CONTROLLER These installation instructions are for the installation of the controller when used in combination with Xpelair supplied fan heaters. The controller is intended for connection to fixed wiring.
