W By Pauline Richards Welcome With Pride This easy-to-make summer banner sends a heart-warming message to family and friends and sets the tone for July celebrations. One motif used eleven times and embroidered lettering are the start. Supplies Note: Banner finished size is approximately 18" x 27".  1 ⁄ 3 yard each of blue and red marbled with stars cotton fabrics  1 ⁄ 8 yard each of red marbled and white cotton fabrics  1 ⁄ 2 yard red, white and blue plaid cotton fabric  Tear-away stabilizer  2 ⁄ 3 yard of muslin backed cotton batting (available at quilt shops) 22 Creative Machine Embroidery         Embroidery, bobbin and sewing thread Temporary spray adhesive 18" x 1 ⁄ 4" wooden dowel Hand sewing needle 1 1 ⁄ 2 yards of 8 lb. monofilament fishing line Rotary cutter, mat and ruler Star embroidery design of your choice no larger than 1 1 ⁄ 4"-diameter Lettering program or alphabet designs of your choice J U LY / A U G U S T 2 0 0 5 Welcome neighbors and guests with a patriotic banner. We use a quick piecing method and simple embroidery so it stitches up in a snap. J U LY / A U G U S T 2 0 0 5 Creative Machine Embroidery 23 When light and dark colors are joined, hide seam allowances Cutting Note: Use a rotary cutter for straight edges.  Cut one 6 1 ⁄ 2" x 8" rectangle from blue fabric for the field behind the stars.  Cut one 3 1 ⁄ 2" x 12 1 ⁄ 2" rectangle from blue fabric for the lettering.  Cut three 2 1 ⁄ 2" x 45" binding strips from the blue fabric on the straight of grain.  Cut one 2 1 ⁄ 2" x 45" strip from the red marbled fabric for the flag’s stripes.  Cut one 2 1 ⁄ 2" x 45" strip from the white fabric for the flag’s stripes  Cut four 1 1 ⁄ 2"-wide true bias strips from the plaid fabric for the flag border.  Cut three 2" x 45" border strips from the red marbled fabric with stars.  Cut two 3" x 3 3 ⁄ 4" rectangles for the lettering side borders. Embroidery  If available, use customizing software and a larger hoop to group nine stars in a space measuring 4 1 ⁄ 2" x 6". A Cut a 1712" strip 17 9 24  Hoop tear-away stabilizer and scrap fabric and complete a test stitch-out of the customized motif.  Hoop tear-away stabilizer and center the 6 1 ⁄ 2" x 9" blue rectangle and embroider the stars motifs.  Remove the stabilizer and press the rectangle carefully from the back.  Use customizing software, a lettering program or alphabet designs to create the word “welcome.” (The lettering should measure about 2 1 ⁄ 4" x 9" when completed.)  Hoop tear-away stabilizer and scrap fabric and complete a test stitch-out of the motif.  Hoop tear-away stabilizer and center the blue 3 1 ⁄ 2" x 12 1 ⁄ 2" fabric rectangle and embroider “WELCOME.”  Hoop tear-away stabilizer, spray with temporary adhesive, center a 3" x 3 3 ⁄ 4" red rectangle and embroider one white star. Remove the stabilizer, press from the wrong side and repeat the process to B Cut one 912" long strip embroider the remaining 3" x 3 3 ⁄ 4" rectangle. Construction Note: Sew right sides together with 1 ⁄ 4" seams. Use a quarter-inch foot for accurate seams.  To make the stripes, cut 29" from the white and red 2 1 ⁄ 2" wide x 45" fabric strips. Note: The strips are cut slightly longer than needed. Trim as needed to even up.  Sew together along one long edge; press the seam allowances flat toward the red fabric.  Cut a 17 1 ⁄ 2" strip and a 9 1 ⁄ 2" strip (A). Cut one 9 1 ⁄ 2" long strip from the remaining white fabric and sew it to the red strip (B). Press all seams toward the red fabric.  Sew the lower edge of the embroidered star field to the upper edge of the striped fabric (C). Press the seam toward the blue fabric. H Sew dowel pocket along banner E Sew plaid borders to banner F Sew a 2" wide red fabric strip and trim to square up. to the we lcome edge. Trim upper rectangle upper Clean -fin ish raw edge. G Machine quilt banner by stitch ing-in-ditch 1 16 " from seam of red fabric,  Sew the 17 1 ⁄ 2" red and white strips to the left side of the star fabric (D) and press toward the red fabric.  Cut a 17 1 ⁄ 2" length from the remaining red fabric, position against the white strip; sew the strip into place. Press the seam allowance toward the red fabric.  Position the plaid borders along each side edge of the flag. Sew and press toward the plaid; square up the edges (E). Sew plaid fabric borders together to the upper and lower edges of the flag. Press and trim the edges to even up.  Sew the red star fabric borders to the upper and lower edges and repeat at the sides.  Sew the star borders to each side of the “WELCOME” rectangle and press carefully from the wrong side.  Sew the “WELCOME” rectangle to the banner upper edge.  Sew a 2" wide red fabric strip to the “WELCOME” rectangle upper edge. Trim the ends to square up (F).  Press the banner carefully from the wrong side.  Lay the muslin backed batting, muslin side against the table. Top with the banner, J U LY / A U G U S T 2 0 0 5 right side up and pin the layers together. Trim away the excess batting and muslin.  Machine quilt the banner by stitchingin-the-ditch of the red fabric, 1 ⁄ 16" from the seam allowances (G).  To create the binding:  Sew the remaining blue fabric strips together at the short ends to make one long strip. Press the seam allowances open and then press the strips in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.  Right sides together position the raw edge even with the banner back; stitch in place.  Fold the tape over the raw edges to encase; press. Stitch the tape close to the outer fold. Complete the sides and lower edge, mitering the corners for a professional look. Do not encase the upper edge.  To create a pocket for the dowel:  Use the remaining blue strip of fabric and cut down to 19" long. Turn under each short end 1 ⁄ 2" and stitch.  Match long edges right sides together to form a tube; sew, then turn right side out.  Position one long edge along the banner upper edge; stitch in place. Flip the upper edge over to the back and pin in place; hand-stitch to secure (H).  Slide the dowel into the pocket.  Thread a needle with fishing line and stitch on each side of the banner back upper edge, leaving length for invisible hanging. G Pauline Richards publishes the Total Embellishment Newsletter (TEN).
