Job............................................................... E-1 iv www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Basic Concepts of the X30 The X30 is a standalone guidance console and is installed to assist users with guiding their vehicle when in a field. It is attached to the inside of the vehicle cabin and provides a virtual guide that the user may follow for more accurate coverage of a given field GPS The X30 is compatible with both GPS and DGPS receivers and offers accuracy from entry-level GPS through DGPS free-to-air marine beacon and WAAS (where available) and subscription systems (including OmniSTAR®, VBS and HP), to Real-time Kinetic (RTK) radio systems offering a range of positioning accuracy to meet any application. Guidance Using the GPS the X30 is able to identify the precise coordinates of the GPS antenna attached to the vehicle. Using this, the X30 is able to generate a virtual map of your current locatio and place a representation of your vehicle on that map. The geographic location of your vehicle on the map correlates with the geographic location of your vehicle in reality. This is how you are able to map the boundaries and the coverage of your field as you drive across it, as the GPS is able to track precisely the area that you have travelled across. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 1-1 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Boundary Mapping With boundary mapping, you are able to create an outline of your field that you can then use over again for any application job that you perform on that field. The benefits of this include being able to know the exact size of your field before moving off and also being able to plan your coverage route before hand. Coverage Mapping (Application Mapping) After knowing the precise area of your field with Boundary Mapping, Coverage Mapping can now be used to track the area covered by your vehicle. The benefits of this include being able to identify missed areas so that you may go over that area again. Alternatively, it will also help you identify areas of overlap so in future you can plan your driving route more carefully so as not to over applicate on a given crop. 1-2 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Getting Started This chapter will provide you with instructions on how to turn on the X30 as well as explain the functions of the buttons you will find on the main operator's screen. You have successfully recalled a field boundary 4-10 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Boundary Offset This section will explain how to set your boundary offset. Negative offset Positive offset The boundary offset is used so you can draw your boundary line at a specific distance on the left or right of your vehicle button. As such, if you were driving with the center of your vehicle directly over your field boundary, your offset would be zero. Sometimes it is only possible to drive next to your field boundary due to a fenceline. This is when you would use boundary offset. There offset values will be positive or negative depending on the direction you are travelling around your field. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 4-11 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Procedure 1. Select the 'boundary offset' button 2. Procedure Follow the procedure below to enter A and B point coordinates. 1. Select the 'manual AB Line' button 2. Enter the latitude and longitude coordinates for your A and B points and confirm your settings when finished 6-8 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Using Pivot Lines Once sufficient data has been gathered within one lap, a circle is drawn on the screen. The size of the circular guide line will depend on the vehicle's distance from the pivot point. For example, the circular guide line will be small when the vehicle is close to the pivot point and large if the vehicle is far from the pivot point. Procedure Ensure you have already created a guide line before proceeding. 1. Select the 'create pivot' button AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 6-9 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 2. The 'create pivot' button will begin flashing and a pivot accuracy bar will appear 3. Turn on coverage mapping and drive your vehicle along a pivot curve. You will have to maintain your vehicle curve until the pivot accuracy bar is full 6-10 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 4. When the pivot point has been determined a red circle will appear 5. Follow this line round and round to complete your coverage map AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 6-11 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Using Curves Curve guide lines are a versatile type of guide line. Curve guide lines allow you to make round and round and row by row passes on fields that are not a standard shape. There are 2 main curve guide lines. These are Identical Curves and Adaptive Curves. Guidance mode only has Adaptive Curves. Auto steering mode has both Identical Curves and Adaptive Curves. The auto steering Adaptive Curves also has 3 options that are not available in Guidance only mode. Identical Curves Identical Curves vs Adaptive Curves Adaptive Curves When using Identical Curves, every Identical Curve guide line is a replica of the initial guide line created with coverage mapping active. This is similar to AB Lines whereby all guide lines that are drawn will 6-12 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual be based ONLY on the first guide line. This is different in Adaptive Curves. For Adaptive Curves, every guide line that is created is based on the previous path taken by the vehicle. This means that Adaptive Curves guide line will change with each pass that is made, unlike Identical Curves which is the same for every pass. There are 3 modes that can be selected for Adaptive Curves to suit different field coverage methods. This modes are only accessible when the auto steering feature is enabled. These modes are Coverage Triggered, Manual End Of Row and U-Turn Recognition. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 6-13 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Using Adaptive Curves (Guidance) This section will explain how to use Adaptive Curves when the X30 console is in Guidance only mode. Procedure Ensure you have already created a guide line before proceeding. 1. Activate coverage mapping and start driving around the ege of your field 2. After one complete pass, red lines will appear parallel to the paths you have previously covered 6-14 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 3. Select the create new guideline button at any time to close (and save) the current Adaptive Curve file. A new Adaptive Curve file will also be created. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 6-15 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Using Adaptive Curves (Auto steering) This section will explain how to use Adaptive Curves and its individual modes when the Auto steering feature is enabled. Coverage Triggered In Coverage Triggered mode, the guide line begins to be drawn when coverage mapping is turned on. The end point of the guide line is defined when coverage mapping is turned off. This means that the guide line will only be tracked when coverage mapping is on. When coverage mapping is turned off and on again, this initiates the tracking of a new guide line. This mode is particularly useful when used with Auto Section Control. Procedure Ensure you have already created a guide line file before proceeding. 1. Select 'Coverage Mapping' mode in the Adaptive Curves menu 6-16 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 2. Turn on coverage mapping and begin driving to start tracking your Adaptive Curve guide line 3. Turn off coverage mapping to stop tracking your Adaptive Curve guide line AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 6-17 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 4. The Adaptive Curve guide line will appear parallel to the previous coverage pass as you return for a second pass 5. Turn on coverage mapping to start tracking the next Adaptive Curve guide line 6-18 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 6. Select the 'create new guide line' button at any time to close (and save) the current Adaptive Curve file. A new Adaptive Curve file will also be created. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 6-19 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Manual End of Row In Manual End of Row mode, the beginning of the guide line is defined when an A point is set and the end of the guide line is defined when a B point is set. This is similar to how AB Lines are set except that the guide line is tracked based on the actual path of the vehicle and not on the direct distance between the A and B point. This mode is the prefered choice when performing round and round coverage of a field Procedure Ensure you have already created a guide line file before proceeding. 1. Select 'Manual End of Row' mode in the Adaptive Curves menu 6-20 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 2. Turn on coverage mapping, set the A point and drive off to start tracking your Adaptive Curve guide line 3. Set the B point to stop tracking your Adaptive Curve guide line AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 6-21 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 4. The Adaptive Curve guide line will appear parallel to the previous coverage pass as you return for a second pass 5. Select the 'create new guide line' button at any time to close (and save) the current Adaptive Curve file. A new Adaptive Curve file will also be created. 6-22 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual U-Turn Recognition U-Turn Recognition mode is the same as Manual End of Row mode with one additional feature. In U-Turn Recognition mode, the console will detect when your vehicle is making a U-Turn and will automatically turn off guide line tracking. This means that instead of setting the B point to close the guide line, the X30 software will do this automatically when a U-Turn is detected. U-Turn Recognition mode is the preferred choice when performing row by row coverage of a field. Procedure Ensure you have already created a guide line file before proceeding. 1. Select 'U-Turn Recognition mode' in the Adaptive Curves menu AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 6-23 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 2. Turn on coverage mapping, set the A point and drive off to start tracking your Adaptive Curve guide line 3. At the end of the row perform a U-turn to automatically set the B point. The Adaptive Curve guide line will appear parallel to the previous coverage pass 6-24 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 4. Select the 'create new guide line' button at any time to close (and save) the current Adaptive Curve file. A new Adaptive Curve file will also be created. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 6-25 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Using Identical Curves This section will explain how to use Identical Curves. This type of guide line is only available when the auto steering feature is enabled. Procedure Ensure you have already created a guide line before proceeding. 1. Turn on coverage mapping, set the A point and drive off to start tracking your Identical Curve guide line 6-26 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 2. Set the B point to stop tracking your Identical Curve guide line 3. The Identical Curve guide line will appear parallel to the previous coverage pass as you return for a second pass AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 6-27 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 4. Every guide line will be identical to the initial Identical Curve AB line no matter what coverage route you take 5. Select the 'create new guideline' button at any time to close (and save) the current Identical Curve file. A new Identical Curve file will also be created. 6-28 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Using Auto Steering This chapter will explain how to enable and use the Auto Steering feature on your console. Auto Steering Calibration Steering Status Steering Calibration Steering Tuning The auto steering calibration menu is located on the right side of the main guidance screen. Here you will be able to adjust the steering tuning and check the steering status. You will also be able to calibrate the compass, wheel angle sensor and mounting bias. This section will explain each of these options in more detail. 7-2 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Steering Calibration Steering Calibration Menu In the steering calibration menu, you can calibrate the compass, wheel angle sensor and the mounting bias. Select any of the options above to start the respective wizard. Compass Calibration Wizard Follow the instructions shown in each step. Once you have completed a step, select the yellow arrow icon to proceed to the next step until you have finished the calibration process. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 7-3 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Steering Status When Auto Steering is enabled, this is where you can check your steering status. When there are no errors, the status bars will display green as shown above. When there is an error, the status bars will display red. 7-4 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Steering Tuning There are 3 settings that can be adjusted under steering tuning. These are Approach Aggressiveness, On Line Aggressiveness and Maximum Turning Angle On Line Aggressiveness Approach Aggressiveness Maximum Turning Angle On Line Aggressiveness This determines how precisely the auto steering system will attempt to follow a guide line once it is on it. Set the on line aggressiveness high if you require your vehicle to follow a very precise path such as when performing between rows seeding. When on line aggressiveness set adequately, the vehicle will follow the line accurately without the wheels oscillating. Approach Aggressiveness This determines how quickly the auto steering system will attempt to move onto a guide line. If the approach aggressiveness is high, the auto steering system will turn the vehicle harder and more sharply in order to move onto a nearby guide line more quickly. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 7-5 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual If the approach aggressiveness is low, the auto steering system will turn the vehicle easier and more slowly to move onto a nearby guide line more gradually. Ideally you want the approach aggressiveness set so that your vehicle approaches the guide line at a set speed to the best of its ability Maximum Turning Angle This is the highest angle that the steering hydraulics are able to physically turn. This informs the auto steering system of the vehicles steering limits so that it does not attempt to steer above this value. 7-6 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Start Using Auto Steering In order to use auto steering, you need to have the following two items: 1. Auto Steering feature enabled 2. A loaded guide line Follow the steps outlined in this section in order to use auto steering on any guide line. Step 1 - Approach the Guide Line Nearest Guide line is visible In this example, the guide line is an AB Line. When you engage Auto Steering, the vehicle will begin to steer to the nearest available guide line. This is usually the guide line that is immediately visible on the Main Guidance screen. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 7-7 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Step 2 - Adjust your approach The vehicle should be facing the direction you wish to auto-steer As you approach your desired guide line, it is best to slow down so that you do not overshoot the line. Slowing down gives you the opportunity to adjust your approach so that it is more consistent with the guide line you wish to follow. While it is not necessary to be exactly on the guide line moving in the exact direction, it is good practice. It also makes it easier for the auto steering system to quickly find its line to begin auto steering. 7-8 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Step 3 - Engage Auto Steering Auto steering is engaged and the vehicle finds its line Select the Steering Wheel button to engage auto steering. The button will change from white to green, indicating that auto steering is engaged. Disengage Auto Steering There are two things you can do if you want to stop Auto steering: 1. Select the Steering Wheel button again 2. Manually turn the steering wheel Auto steering is automatically disengaged when the steering wheel is turned manually. This is a safety feature and allows you to regain immediate control over your vehicle whenever you want to. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 7-9 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Auto Steering limitations While the auto steering system is robust, it does have limitations. Being aware of this is important for both your own safety and also for the longevity of your auto steering system. The first limitation is the steering limitations. The auto steering system cannot perform sharp turns. These include U-turns and 90 degree angle turns. Because of this, you will need to take manual control of your vehicle whenever you want to do a sharp turn. The second limitation is the speed limitation. While the auto steering system can still follow a relatively straight line at high speeds, driving at high speed in general reduces the effectiveness of the auto steering system. This is due to the physical limitations of both the hydraulic system and the AES-25 electric steering system. High speeds require the auto steering system to make faster steering adjustments and this may lead to oscillations in the wheels and poor adherence to the guide line. The auto steering system works best when the vehicle is moving at moderate to low speeds. Moderate speeds allow the system to make better adjustments and produce higher quality tracking of a given guide line. 7-10 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Appendix A Overlap Tractor Schematic Possible Causes Low Voltage Solution Start vehicle and check that voltage is between 12V and 18V Check for damaged wiring Contact Topcon dealer for repair or replacement AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 Implement Offset Inline Offset Ground Antenna Height Fixed Axle Antenna Location GPS Steering Location Swath Blown Fuse Damaged Unit A-1 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Notes: A-2 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Appendix B File Name Information When you create a new file, a file name is automatically generated. In the image below is a file name automatically generated for a Job file. Every file name can be broken into 3 part. The first part represents for the file type. For the above example this is represented by ‘J’. The second part represents the date the file was created. This is in the format of month/day/year or mm/dd/yy. For the above example, the date is 11th February 2010. The third part represents the time the file was created. The time is always displayed in 24 hour clock format. This means that 0000 represents 12:00am and 2300 represents 11:00pm. For the above AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 B-1 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual example, the time is 12:01pm. Below are examples of each file type and explanations of what they represent. Example File Type Date Time C_020110_1351 Curve 1st February 2010 1:51pm L_020110_1357 Line (AB) 1st February 2010 1:57pm P_020410_1121 Pivot 4th February 2010 11:21am J_011410_0034 Job 14th January 2010 12:34am As you would have noticed, the first letter of the file name represents the first letter of the file type. These automatically generated file names provide a good reference for you to keep track of which files belong to the same Job. Boundary files and Guidance Patterns files are generally created in conjunction with a Job. The duration of a Job is stated in the coverage report and by knowing when a Job was started and stopped, you will be able to easily locate other related files. C-4 www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Appendix D Alarms List This is a list of all the alarms on the console and their descriptions Alarm Disengage End of row Flow sensor fail No sprayer coms No ground speed Pressure high Pressure low Description This is triggered when the steering has been disengaged by non-console input. These include due to losing satellites, losing the guideline and manually turning the steering wheel This is triggered when either the the end or row, first distance or second distance are passed This alarm is triggered whenever the master is turned on, ground speed present, and at least 1 Section is turned on, and there are no flow sensor pulses being received. This is triggered if the sprayer feature is activate but the console is unable to communicate with the sprayer ECU This alarm is triggered if the master switch is turned and there is no ground speed present. The high pressure alarm indicates that the pressure signal input has exceeded the alarm point setting. If correctly set, this usually indicates a blockage, booms off when they should be on, or Sprayer speed too high. The most common cause of this alarm is an empty tank. With minimum flows set for nozzles, flowmeter and pressure, this alarm will only show up with a pump or plumbing failures, or an empty tank. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 D-1 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Incorrect rate Tank empty Tank low D-2 This is a sprayer alarm, when the sprayer is in Auto mode and the target rate is not achieved. This alarm simply states that the calculated volume has reached zero. If there is still spray in the tank, the system will still operate giving the volume used still accumulating, and the tank volume as a negative figure. This alarm gives a warning that the tank is running low www.topconpa.com X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual Appendix E Sample Job This section will provide an example of how a Job can be done when utilizing the X30 software. If a field does not already have a boundary mapped and you want to perform coverage mapping, you may perform these two activites at the same time. Below are instructions on how to perform the coverage of your field in this manner. 1. Create a new Boundary file 2. Create a new Job file (Page 4-1) (Page 5-1) A Job file is created after the Boundary file to ensure that the job you create is recalled when that Boundary is recalled. Boundary files will recall job files but Job files will not recall Boundary files 3. Set your boundary offset (Page 4-11) 4. Select the start recording boundary button (Page 4-4) 5. Select the start coverage mapping button (Page 5-4) 6. Drive off along your field boundary 7. Create a Curve Guidance pattern (Page 6-12) Normally Curves is selected for the first and second lap. AB Lines is then selected and this guidance pattern is used to complete the coverage of the rest of the field. Using Guidance, this is considered the most effective way to get maximum coverage on a rectangular shaped field. AGA4084-EN-TPA Rev 1.3 E-1 X30 Guidance and Auto Steering Operator's Manual 8. Select the Complete boundary button when within 50 meters of starting point (Page 4-6) 9. Perform another lap around your field following the Curve Guide line that was created during your first lap 10. Create an AB Lines Guidance pattern (Page 6-5) and complete the coverage of your field 11.
