This is the standard high-density rack model used for the XC-series cluster. The quad bracket can accept up to four 1U server systems. Each server requires a mounting slide that inserts into a track in the quad bracket. No tools are required to install the quad bracket or the slides. 2 Audience HP service representatives and other persons trained to install hardware mounting options and system components in the rack. Such persons are expected to understand the hazards of working in this environment and to take suitable precautions to minimize danger to themselves and others. 3 Documentation Resources You can download the documentation for components referenced in this installation guide from the following locations: • DL360 G3 ProLiant Server: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantdl360/index.html • HP Model 10642 rack: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantstorage/racks (Select 10000-series rack and Documentation on the Web page menus.) • HP XC cluster options: http://www.hp.com/techservers/clusters/xc_clusters.html 4 Overview of the Installation Procedure Complete the following steps to install the quad bracket kit: 1. The track, into which a server is inserted. 2. The front mounting tabs, which insert into the front rack column. 3. The front threaded insert for the server’s locking thumbscrew. 4. The rear mounting tabs, which insert into the rear rack column. 6.2 Mounting Slide The flat surface forms the back of the mounting slide, and it mounts to the side of the server chassis. Figure 1-2 shows the front and rear orientation of the left-hand mounting slide. 1-2 Quad Bracket Kit Installation Guide Figure 1-2: Orientation of the Left-Hand Mounting Slide 2 1 Front of the Switch The following mounting features are referenced in the installation procedure: 1. The cut-out (hole) located at the rear of the mounting slide. 2. The keyhole slots for attaching the slide to the server chassis. 7 Preparing for Installation No tools are required to install the quad bracket and mounting slides. Prepare a suitable work surface, such as a table, on which you can safely stack the unpacked servers and have room to attach the slide mounts. Unpack the four servers and install any options and upgrades. If factory-installed slide mounts are preinstalled on the servers, remove these slides and retain them for future use. Stack the servers on a stable work surface. _________________________ Note _________________________ Some pressure is required to attach the slide mounts to the side of the server. Ensure that the work surface is not slippery, or has a raised edge against which you can rest the server to prevent it from sliding. Remove the cabinet doors and side panels from the rack for ease of installation. 8 Identifying the Installation Location The quad bracket occupies 4x1U (7 inches) of cabinet space in the rack. Each 1U location is numbered 01–42 from the bottom to the top of the rack columns. There are three mounting holes for each 1U of space in the rack. The lowest of the four tracks in the quad bracket is the baseline for its installation location. For example, if you want to mount the quad bracket at the very bottom of the rack, its baseline will align with position 03 on the rack. The Power Distribution Units (PDUs) occupy positions 01 and 02. Quad Bracket Kit Installation Guide 1-3 The quad bracket’s installation location is dependent on the configuration rules for your XC cluster upgrade bundle. (You can obtain the documentation from the locations specified in Section 3.) An upgrade bundle consists of a number of different components, such as servers, Ethernet switches, and cables of predetermined length. Each component must occupy a specific rack location so that the inter-component cabling is correct. For example, an existing cluster compute building block (CBB) contains 20 servers, and you are upgrading it with 8 additional servers. The first available installation location for the quad bracket will be at rack position 31. See the cluster upgrade installation information for the configuration layout and for the correct sequence of component installation. For applications other than the XC cluster series, follow the rack location instructions in the documentation supplied with your server. 9 Mounting the Quad Bracket in the Rack Mount the pair of quad brackets in the rack as follows. The procedure describes the installation as viewed from the front of the rack. 1-4 1. Identify the right-hand quad bracket, as shown in Figure 1-1. 2. Align the lowest track in the quad bracket with the correct rack position (marked on the front column). 3. Insert the rear mounting tabs through the square mounting holes in the rear rack column (arrow 1 in Figure 1-3). 4. Align the quad bracket with its corresponding position on the front rack column so that it is level and square (arrow 2 in Figure 1-3). 5. Push the quad bracket forward against the front column until it snaps into position and is retained by the snap springs (arrow 3 in Figure 1-3). Repeat this procedure for the left-hand quad bracket. 10 Mounting the Slides to the Server Attach the mounting slides to the server as follows: 1. Identify the left-hand mounting slide, as shown in Figure 1-2. Ensure that the cut-out is toward the rear of the server. 2. Position the keyhole slots over the raised posts in the side of the case, as shown in Figure 1-4. Figure 1-4: Installing the Left-Hand Mounting Slide on the Server 1 2 3. Holding the server to prevent it from moving, push the slide mount toward the front bezel of the server until the slide mount clicks into position. 4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the right-hand mounting slide. Quad Bracket Kit Installation Guide 1-5 5. When both mounting slides are installed, insert the server into one of the tracks in the quad bracket. Using both hands, and pushing on either side of the bezel, slide the server in until its thumbscrews are in contact with the bracket’s threaded inserts. 6. Secure the server by tightening the two thumbscrews that are attached to the front bezel of the server. 7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the remaining three servers. 8. Slide each of the four servers into a track in the quad bracket. It is important to secure each server in the rack with its two captive thumbscrews, shown in Figure 1-5. The quad bracket has no other mechanism to retain the server in place. The slightest outward movement might put strain on the server’s connection cables. Figure 1-5: Installing the Server in the Quad Bracket Thumbscrew When removing a server (after disconnecting its cabling), ensure that you use both hands to keep the server level, and to bear its weight as it disengages from the track. Allowing the server to tilt down might cause damage to the quad rack or the mounting slide. 11 Cabling and Power Follow the installation instructions for the XC cluster upgrade bundle with which this quad rack kit was shipped. (You can obtain the documentation from the locations specified in Section 1.3). It is important that you connect the servers to the correct network cables and interconnect cables, and that you apply power in the correct sequence. For applications other than the HP XC-series, see the cabling and power-up instructions shipped with your server. 1-6 Quad Bracket Kit Installation Guide
