Yamaha has led the field in the Sport Heritage segment in recent years, pioneering the market with new motorcycles that come from the factory standard but have more than a passing resemblance to full customised machines, hence the reference ‘born customised’. A lot of the inspiration for this line up of game-changing models comes from inspirational concept machines built in collaboration with the world’s best custom builders through the Yard Built platform. It was through this pioneering and never ceasing evolution of bike building that ‘Faster Sons’ was born, a natural development of the Sport Heritage philosophy. ‘Faster Sons’ tips its hat in respect to the bikes that came before, whilst also showing pride in the faster sons of today and tomorrow, Yamaha wanted to continue to show respect and love for the icons of the past and the generation that continues to ride the classics, whilst shaking up the new generation, bringing the love of icons and timeless style and smashing it together with cutting edge technology for a faster generation. To help transform this philosophy from theory to reality, Yamaha chose to work with legendary Los Angeles based Japanese bike builder Shinya Kimura and Californian racing icon and custom builder Roland Sands. Shinya worked with the latest parallel twin motor, adding classic design and blending cutting edge technology with iconic styling from the past whilst Roland brought his pure sports excitement to the latest triple in-line engine to add a high adrenaline touch to the retro world. The two concepts providing some further inspiration and confirmation of the Faster Sons philosophy, contributing to the development of two exciting new models in the Sport Heritage range, the XSR700 and the XSR900. Both are true ‘Faster Sons’ machines, born
customised but still an open book and built to be easily personalised and customised further by their owners.

The Faster Sons story doesn’t stop there with just the motorcycles however. Motorcycles are rarely simply a means of transport; they are usually so much more, and a key part of a rider’s lifestyle. The summer of 2015 kicked off with Yamaha’s first ever Yamaha Dealer Built competition. Following on from the massive success of the Yard Built campaign where the world’s top customisers collaborated to create stunning builds based on the Sport Heritage range, the competition saw European Yamaha Dealers create the coolest custom motorcycles to rival the top customisers. The project brought the Yard Built world to life in dealerships across Europe with a total of 41 ambitious entries creating stunning custom machines from the Sport Heritage range. Once the bikes were completed, over ten thousand bike fans from across Europe cast their votes on the 41 Dealer Built bikes entered to help choose the four category winners. As a result the winning SR400, XJR1300, XV950 and VMAX custom were revealed in all their glory at the Glemseck 101 event in Germany in September alongside the world’s best custom machines. “The project proved a great validation that the custom scene is truly alive and kicking not just in the niche custom world, but has been embraced across Europe by our dealerships,” commented Yamaha Motor Europe Product Manager Shun Miyazawa. “The end results were really impressive, with some stunning builds that wouldn’t be out of place sitting alongside the top custom builders. More importantly it shows that our Sport Heritage range of motorcycles are the perfect base for personalisation. Many of the builds featured genuine Yamaha accessories, showing that with a little imagination you can make your own custom bike easily from one of the Sport Heritage machines without any cutting or welding to the frame, putting custom abilities within the reach of our consumers.” For the VMAX category, the winner came from France. Liberty Yam created a stunning tribute to legendary, fondly remembered, Yamaha France Dakar Rally racing icon and former president of Yamaha Motor France, Jean-Claude Olivier (JCO), with a muscular Café-Dragster build in 60th anniversary yellow and black colours. The XJR1300 class was won by German dealership Motorrad Klein, a purposeful, race-inspired machine with more than a passing reference to WSB racing star Noriyuki Haga in the build. The winning bike in the XV950 category came from Portuguese dealers Yamaha Motor 7 with a fantastic scrambler inspired build featuring two distinct colour schemes. Last but not least comes the SR400 from Spanish dealership Motor Madrid, a classic café racer take on the hugely popular SR. darker goth and punk-like styles, which we know here in Europe, to the extremely bright Sweet Lolita, Dekora, Fairy Kei and Yamanba styles. Though each of these styles may seem more dramatic and intense than we are used to seeing in Europe, the main goal remains the same; subcultures create bonds between people with the same values and as they resist the dominant culture and voice their membership by fitting a certain image, with clothes, hairstyles, music genres and symbols. It’s not surprising that subcultures are often linked to the young and rebellious, but subcultures are by no means always a bad thing. In a negative light it may seem as if cliques use their looks to form barriers to exclude people who are not a part of the subculture and excludes outsiders. To them these over-the-top styles can seem senseless or even offensive, but these subcultures are actually full of meaning. These youths not only quite cleverly use their looks to find like-minded

The phrase ‘modern technology is making the world smaller’ has become a cliché. We all know people are able to travel further in less time and we get news from the underside of a world in the blink of an eye to feed our curiosity of what the world is like on the other side of the planet. Visiting Tokyo is on many people’s bucket list, but do we really know what to expect of this place? Tokyo is world famous. Not only has everyone heard of it, but they’ve seen it as well. It may not have been in person, but we have all walked its streets by watching movies such as ‘Godzilla’, ‘Lost in Translation’, ‘Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift’ or even the sequel of the animated movie ‘Cars’. We’ve heard a lot about the city too. Tokyo is frequently mentioned in popular music. Like New York, Tokyo is a city that plays a big part in popular media, it’s almost surprising how little we know about it, because it seems so familiar. Likewise, we have all eaten Japanese food at least once in our lives, but you don’t get a real taste of Tokyo’s richness in culture until you visit the city itself and take in all the sensations and experiences it has to offer. As the cultural centre of Japan, the city is full of colour. Nature-lovers are welcome from the end of March to the beginning of April in Ueno Onshi Park, Asukayama Park, the Meguro River, the Chidorigafuchi park, and the Sumida River bank to enjoy the beautiful pink glow of the cherry trees that blossom. The urbantourists might prefer the Shibuya district, the famous shopping district in Tokyo that never sleeps, where thousands of neon lights shine bright all through the night. And if you want to see colour during the day there’s one place you can’t miss: the area around Harajuku station, where various extreme subcultures cohabit together, anytime of day, 365 days a year. These Japanese subcultures flamboyant and subversive fashions, sometimes referred to as aesthetic movements, veer wildly from the
people to create friendships that last a life time, but they also experiment with fashion and creativity at a level that European society, which is seen as open-minded, is yet to reach. It’s the ‘colours’ of these subcultures that bring inspiration for many journalists, bloggers, and fashions icons all over the world and make Tokyo the vibrant city that we know it to be from the media. It is a place where free spirits can run wild, something that should appeal to brave motorcyclists. Yamaha’s MT world is not just about the bikes, but also about living the ‘Dark Side of Japan’ and the new forces that emerge there. MT riders are not afraid of the dark and they certainly don’t shy away from the unfamiliar either. These people are rebels; they don’t follow trends, they either make them or break them. To let their boldness shine through, Yamaha introduced some radical new Night Fluo colour identities to let them stand out like a “Ray of Darkness”. After all, similar to Tokyo’s subcultures, edgy individuality should be celebrated.

THE DARK SIDE The loud and rebellious MT Range may serve the purpose to provoke and evoke emotion, but that does not mean at the expense of style and handling. These bikes may be specially built to suit free-spirited bad boys, but it is the rebels with a taste for style and a feel for finesse that Yamaha is after. It is not for nothing that every model in the MT range has received rave reviews from the press, but you needn’t take the media’s word for it.
Last autumn, thrill-seekers were given the chance to ‘take the bull by the horns’ at the Yamaha organised MT Tours. They got to experience the MT models’ exhilarating torque and action first hand during the pan-European tour and let out their dark side with the MT apparel range.

Two separate Amsterdam based Dutch design pioneers live and breathe the new school. From the world of horology, TW Steel stand out as the new breed in watchmaking, bold and fearless in design and attitude, unafraid to be different. From the world of custom motorcycle building, Numbnut Motorcycles are the hungry young guns, delivering a modern twist to old school cool with their two-wheeled creations. The two come together to create one-off creations, one each within their respective worlds, a one-off timepiece and a unique concept custom XV950 motorcycle. The design of one will influence the other, with the TW Steel attitude and bold design influencing both the timepiece and the motorcycle. Two worlds will collide in craftmanship, style, shaking up the establishment with maximum impact.

Europe’s hottest custom builders are all present, some having driven thousands of kilometres in vans with their latest creations in the back, ready to do battle on the drag strip. Add in 75,000 cheering motorcycle fans and you can imagine the atmosphere. A hard day of racing and admiring the crazy range of custom machines is rounded off each night with a serious rock and roll party with live bands and singers taking the day out in style. The event perfectly captures everything cool about the revolution in the custom motorcycle scene with a mass of trendy clothing brands on show for the mixed crowd to enjoy. As a key player in the revolution, Yamaha’s Yard Built project was out in force last year with custom bikes on show from some of the world’s top builders, including it roCkS!bikes, Wrenchmonkees and local stars Marcus Walz, JvB-moto and Kingston Custom. The stunning ‘Faster Son’ by legendary bike builder Shinya Kimura stole the show and completed the Sport Heritage range representing the XSR700. The famous Glemseck 1/8mile sprint races saw some intense action with Shinya Kimura’s ‘Faster Son’ put through its paces
in the 101 Sprint International alongside Taiwanese builder Winston Yeh on the Guerilla Four. Local hero Jens vom Brauck gave the monster VMAX ‘Infrared’ a run down the 1/8mile to the delight of the crowd. The star of the show was undoubtedly El Solitario. The XJR1300 ‘Big Bad Wolf’ fought its way to the finals of the special ‘Who Wants to Kill the Cat’ heat, taking ultimate glory and toppling the three year reign of the Lucky Cat Garage’s custom BMW. After the sweet taste of success Yamaha will be back in 2016 to defend the title and keep the Glemseck vibe alive.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the XJR (2015), Yamaha broke new ground, collaborating with Japanese selvedge denim company Iron Heart to create the first Selvedge denim inspired Yard Built motorcycle. Founded in Japan in 2003 by Shinichi Haraki after 25 years working in the denim industry, Iron Heart has a global reputation for making beautiful clothing, pure in function and not

restricted by the dictates of fashion. As with Yamaha, their attention to detail, and choice of high quality materials is renowned. The result of the collaboration was a beautiful café racer that fits perfectly into both the Iron Heart universe, and also the Yard Built world. Both brands share a huge respect for hand craftsmanship mixed with modern technology, and this respect and passion was
clear to see on the bike itself. The overall build represents the philosophy of Yamaha and also the Iron Heart brand. The Iron Heart XJR respects the technical side of the XJR, so all the functional engineering aspects are preserved so people can enjoy both fast riding whilst still being to have a relaxed cruise down to an Iron Heart store to get some attention and look
good! The final result of the collaboration between Iron Heart and Yamaha is indeed a stunning ‘grown up’ café racer. Showcasing everything both Yamaha and Iron Heart stand for in respecting hand craftsmanship and timeless design mixed with the latest technology. As you would expect from an expert in denim, the seat is hand made from 21oz selvedge denim and set with pure silver rivets.

DAY TRIPS, BIKER HOLIDAYS OR A PAN-EUROPEAN TOUR; SURE THESE ADVENTURES DIFFERENTIATE IN LENGTH, BUT THEY ALL REQUIRE PLANNING.
Trip scheduling, mapping, navigation, and the right equipment are all vital to a safe and enjoyable trip. This opinion is also shared by well-seasoned explorer Nick Sanders, who is famous on the adventure scene for his global travels. Whatever the circumstances, you can count on it that he has dealt with it and is a fountain of useful tips gained from personal experience.
TIP 01 MIND MAPPING
Every trip starts with the will to achieve a target. It’s this goal that forms the core of your expedition, but it will need further developing. “Mental preparation is as essential as packing the right equipment”, says Sanders. He advises to not only create
a well-thought out plan and riding schedule, but also make a list of your objectives to keep reminding yourself of why you embarked upon your adventure in the first place, whilst you’re on the road.

Reminiscing about some of the most extreme conditions he faced, Sanders shared a story on how he travelled through the Nubian Desert in North Sudan where it was 45 degrees C. “I crossed the sand track alone on an YZF-R1”, says Sanders. “There was no water or fuel and if the bike developed a mechanical problem I would be in trouble. I rode the bike carefully to avoid a breakdown.”
Though this particular experience had a happy end it certainly gave the traveller food for thought. “Consider taking a SPOT emergency indication device which tells your family where you are.”

‘Less is more’ is a cliché for a reason and it certainly applies when packing for an adventure. “Pack your panniers with what you think you need then take everything out and repack with 50% less. People always take too much stuff.”

Sure you have to pack with moderation, but you should
always bring a pair of great sunglasses. “Tinted visors are fine but sometimes you want the air on your face”, says Sanders. “I use Wiley X myself and I’m always careful to use the right lens for sun and snow.”
TIP 05 WARM HANDS & BODY CORE
Lastly, always make sure you have the right equipment and apparel to keep your hands and body core warm. “You will also need heated grips and gloves and sometimes a heated vest too. It’s very important to keep the body core temperature warm and you can ride in freezing conditions. I use thin layers called Oxford Layers under my Touratech Campanero suit. Thin layers trap air like a wet suit and
this is essential for staying warm. I am planning a new trip in the winter to ride to North Cape (northern tip of Norway) and I anticipate needing a heated vest. A heated vest also kept me warm when I rode through the night during my 19-day record ride around the world in 2005 on an YZF-R1. At 2am the temperature drops until the sun rises and the cold induces sleep.”

Let’s face it, secretly or out loud, every motorcycle rider dreams of being a racer. Last year the buyers of the YZF-R1M got the once-in-a-lifetime chance to race on some of Europe’s best racetracks as a part of the Yamaha Racing Experience (YRE) and experience what Yamaha’s racing DNA really is all about. Riders who wanted to know their Supersport machine better could sign up and take their riding skills to the next level, allowing them to hit the apex like never before. Previous racing experience was not required. The racing apprentices were invited to a world-famous circuit such as Mugello and received tips in informative workshops held by racing elite; experts of Bridgestone and Yamaha Motor Europe and members of Yamaha’s
MotoGP crew such as Data Technicians Matteo Flamigni and Davide Marelli, Jorge Lorenzo’s Team Manager Wilco Zeelenberg, and Valentino Rossi’s hugely experienced Crew Chief Silvano Galbusera. During a number of workshops these racing insiders helped the YZF-R1M riders to fully understand and benefit from the cutting edge electronics package and bike settings, allowing them to reach their full race potential with their machines. Not only were technologies like the Communication Control Unit (CCU), Electronic Racing Suspension (ERS) and (Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) explained during these workshops, but also how human interaction with the

machine can influence race performance. After Yamaha’s insiders shared their insight, the participants were equipped with the knowledge to adapt their bike to their riding style and it was time to put what was learnt into practice. The racing pupils got to ride around the track with none other than Yamaha Motor Racing Managing Director Lin Jarvis, MotoGP legend Colin Edwards, 2015 British Superbike Champion Josh Brookes, European and IDM German Superbike talents Kev Coghlan and Lukas Trautmann to name a few. What more could you wish for? In the motorsports industry, as in every business sector, it is partnerships and the dedication and contribution of third parties that makes a business stronger. This is reflected in the strong partnership between Yamaha and Akrapovič.
Akrapoviˇ c founder Igor Akrapoviˇ c ’s main interest has always been racing. As a former active motorcycle racer he naturally became an engine tuner and immediately recognised the influence of exhaust systems on engine power and various characteristics. It’s this attention to detail, dedication to motorsport and strive for perfection that Akrapoviˇ c and Yamaha have in common and it forms the root of their relationship. The companies first started working together in 1998 with the World Superbike team. The partnership proved successful and won multiple championships, including the FIM 2009 World Superbike Championship, 2015 MXGP World Championship and the 2015 Manufacturers’, Teams’ and Riders’ title in MotoGP. According to Akrapoviˇ c it’s these championships that provide the necessary data for the production bike exhausts, but how closely do the sport-segment exhausts compare to those on Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo’s YZR-M1? “From a technical point of view, the front part, headers, and collectors are very similar. However the biggest difference is in the muffler, which was developed to meet specific regulations like noise and emission levels”, answers Igor. Historically there were quite a few challenges in the industry regarding restrictions and weight issues, but having been in the business for 25 years, Akrapoviˇ c has enough experience to ride the waves of change and stay a key player in the industry. “The major lesson we learned is to always be prepared and be able to respond quickly to the fast-changing circumstances in the global motorcycle and car industry”, says Igor, and he has the company slogan to back his statement up. “It comes as no surprise that our company slogan is ‘The Future Is Ultra-Light’. In our view, this is the direction to go concerning the development for motorcycles and cars, keeping in mind the future of plugin petrol hybrids and their related problems with added weight and inadequate sound due to engine downsizing.” “Only companies prepared for such challenges will be able to compete and successfully overcome all the obstacles, to enjoy a long-lasting and successful future.” Yamaha and Akrapoviˇ c , both innovative leaders in their field, have developed products to move the motorcycle market forward for many years, and by that we mean every segment of the industry. ROOKIE REVELATION Romain Febvre went from rookie to reigning FIM MXGP World Champion in what seemed to be the blink of an eye and became a household name in the world of motocross. His quick rise to fame was astonishing and caused a global media sensation, but it came with one minor downside; very few people actually really know the man underneath the helmet. We caught up with Febvre after his masterful 2015 season to find out what kind of person he really is. Febvre is a calm and modest young adult, one that upon the first glimpse could be mistaken for a normal boy while in reality he is so much more than that, something that becomes clear as soon as he opens the throttle. The Frenchman comes from a close and warm family and showed skills on twowheelers from an early age. His favourite toy as a young boy was appropriately his dirt bike, which he started riding at just three years of age, when he wasn’t even in school yet. Febvre further developed his skills while practicing BMX in skate parks as a child, which remains one of his hobbies outside of the track today. It soon became clear he was destined for the racing lifestyle, though he didn’t really have a racing role model while growing up. “If I wouldn’t be a racer I would have gone to school until 19 years old to learn mechanics
on cars and bikes, so I could work with my dad or become a race mechanic in motocross or car racing”, says Febvre. When meeting the now fully-grown MXGP Champion for the first time he is reserved and tends to not speak much and until he knows a person better, but the opposite is true during a race weekend. When the heat is on he needs little encouragement and during a Grand Prix weekend he is always ready to go and loves being with the team to talk about everything and anything. “I don’t need something special to get in to the mood before the race”, he says. “I’m always excited to race on the weekend.” This interesting contrast between the mellow boy off track and the fiercely competitive rider on track can be explained by his never failing determination which makes both his best and his worst trait. “My best trait is that, when I have one goal, I do everything possible to realise the goal or dream. I don’t mind putting the work in”, shares Febvre. “For me the worst part of my personality is, I think, that sometimes I’m focused too much and then I only listen to myself.” However, his determination is not something the rookie sensation would like to tone down, in fact the opposite is true. Febvre is eager to reach new goals and move on to new heights – literally. Though he usually likes to spend his sparse free time at his home in Belgium, preferably during the summer by going out on the water on his Yamaha SUPERJET™ and by having a good time with his girlfriend, he would like to make some time to take up new extreme sports. “I would like to learn snowboarding. I already ski but I’m not able to snowboard. Also, though I’m scared, I do want to go skydiving, jumping out of a plane with a parachute or go bungee jumping from a bridge with an elastic rope!”

had seized control of 750-class road-racing with the massively powerful TZ750 – effectively two sideby-side water-cooled TZ350 twins. Kenny excelled in the few road races that were on the 25-round AMA calendar. But he was still a dirt-tracker at heart, and for one unforgettable defining moment he married the two. His mentor at Yamaha was former 250 World Champion Kel Carruthers, and together they dreamed up a Harley-eating flat-tracker, powered by the formidable TZ750 two-stroke. It was wildly over-powered, a raging beast. Kenny tamed it to win first time out at the Indianapolis Mile, with a last-lap rooster-tail surge that is still spoken about with awe. It was also the last time out. At Kenny’s recommendation, the lethal monster of wheel-spin was outlawed. One AMA road-race was the season-starting Daytona 200. Many European racers enjoyed the annual big-money outing to Florida, and here Kenny made first contact with the likes of Giacomo Agostini and Barry Sheene, the confident seniors of grand prix road racing. At Daytona, then at Imola in Italy and at the Trans-Atlantic Challenge match series in Britain, Kenny proved he could run with the best, and sometimes beat them. The step into the World Championships in 1978 was triggered partly because of Yamaha’s withdrawal from US dirt-track. It gave Kenny a new target. He took deadly aim.

It was this independent streak that linked the pioneering American Grand Prix superstar to Yamaha right from the start of a career that would span the world. Together, the short, direct-speaking Californian and the growing Japanese motorcycle company would partner one another to great things. Compared with today’s stars, Kenny came late to motorcycle racing, aged 12, in local dirt-track events close to his home in Modesto, in the heart of California’s Central Valley, inland from San Francisco. The kid was good, a natural who could coax his motorcycle to do more than his rivals’. As importantly

he was hooked. Enthusiasm and blatant talent gained him local sponsorship, and Kenneth Leroy Roberts quit school, and turned professional the day after his 18th birthday. The normal route would have been to join the crowd, riding Harley-Davidson V-twin flat-trackers, staple of the fairground tracks, TT courses and the legendary mile and halfmile ovals that made up the AMA Grand National championship. But he was a maverick. He looked
elsewhere. And that is how he joined up with Yamaha – hired by the US importers for an underdog fight against the dominant domestic giant. His machine was wrought from a relatively humble street bike, the XS650 (Yamaha’s first big four-stroke), and was lacking in race-bred horsepower. But Kenny’s determination and knack of triumphing against the grain took him to two Grand National titles in 1973 and 1974 – the highest honour in US racing. By now Yamaha

Agostini had won the first of Yamaha’s 16 premier-class rider titles in 1975, but was now close to retirement. The new king was Barry Sheene, dominant on the factory Suzuki. Kenny came into his kingdom small, abrasive and very serious. He raced in both 250 and 500 classes, the former to help learn new tracks (he won his first 250 GP). By the end of the 11-race series he was focused only on his TZ500, because he was on target to become the first rookie and the first American World Champion. He clinched it by ten points
from Sheene, and went on to win it for two more years straight. Kenny remained the dominant figure until his retirement at the end of 1983. At the same time as his racing pre-eminence, maverick Kenny became an outspoken advocate for improved safety, and prime mover in the breakaway World Series. The project failed, but had forced a major rethink of respect and reward for the riders in the world championships. Kenny wasn’t done with racing though, nor with Yamaha. He returned as fledgling 250-class team owner in 1984. It was the first step to a new kind of prominence. After a year to establish a bigger infrastructure, Kenny moved to the senior class in 1986, running Randy Mamola and Mike Baldwin in Lucky Strike colours. Randy was third and then second overall. Two years later Wayne Rainey ar-
rived, and achieved the same results. In 1990 came Kenny’s greatest success: now with Marlboro backing for the official factory team. Rainey took the 500 crown (the first of three in a row) and John Kocinski the 250 title. All, of course, on Yamaha. Kenny’s success as a team owner continued; but – ever the maverick dirt-tracker – he struck out on his own after more than 25 years with Yamaha as an independent constructor. The high ground was to elude him, and he eventually retired to California – though not before seeing his son Kenny Junior take the 500 title in 2000. The father-and-son achievement was another first for the Roberts family. Kenny’s links with Yamaha remain strong: a bond of affection and mutual respect that means his legendary “bumble-bee” black-and-yellow livery plays an important part in the company’s 60th anniversary celebrations. A legend that the maverick and the Japanese company created together.

becoming more and more enthusiastic and started buying the first motorcycle magazines in 1983. At the time that was the only way to follow the world championship news and the victories of my favorite Yamaha pilots like Kenny Roberts and Eddie Lawson”, admits the Portuguese Yamaha obsessive. His admiration for his Yamaha riders resulted in him buying his first Yamaha, an RZ50, at age 16 followed by a DTR125, FZR1000 and many others through the years.

Reminiscing on his teenage years, he shared; “At age 17, I had my first racing experience at the TZR50 trophy. By then, I was hopelessly addicted to Yamaha, forever!” “Amongst my family and friends I was known to be the ‘Yamaha maniac’. My grandfather and my uncle were also enthusiasts but nothing comparable. Did I ever meet someone as passionate for Yamaha as myself? Maybe not, but I certainly came across a limited number of people that share a great deal of love for Yamaha.”
TO SAY MIGUEL OSÓRIO (42) IS A SUPER-FAN IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. HE USED HIS PASSION TO CREATE WHAT IS NOTHING SORT OF A RACING FAN’S WILDEST DREAM.
Osório is the Director of the ‘Yamaha Motor 7’ dealership in Portugal and has a burning passion for racing and all things Yamaha ever since his early childhood. His first contact with a motorcycle came at just two years of age, when his grandfather bought his uncle a Yamaha DT175 that he took Osório riding on. It didn’t take long before he got drawn into the world of burning fuel and laying rubber tracks. “At school age, I was

Osório admits that there are many qualities about the Yamaha brand that fuel his ever-lasting passion, but the honesty the brand shows towards its customers, the reliability of the products, and its racing heritage stand out the most. He strives to bring these qualities to light every day at his dealership, which was directly founded on his passion for racing.
“My relationship started with racing in the 90’s”, says Osóro. “At the time, the Yamaha dealers in Lisbon used to have their own racing teams and I raced for three of them.” He drew inspiration from it and started his first workshop in 1999. Just a year later he followed it up by collaborating together with Yamaha on a racing team that participated in a number of endurance races, which are some of his fondest memories.
“I recall 2002; at the time we were racing with an YZF-R1 and raced the 6 hours of Estoril. It was awesome! The same year and with the same bike we also raced at the 49th Macau GP. It was a unique experience and also counts as one of my best memories. It was a lot of fun!” The enjoyable moments of racing were accompanied with long days of hard-work and a short three years later Osório got permission to sell Yamaha motorcycles and got the right to have a fully official Yamaha dealership in 2008. Ever since, the number of collaborations between Osório and Yamaha have increased, but there is one particular memory that warms this Yamaha fan’s heart. “There were some great moments through the years but there is one I remember with particular joy. It was in 2005, when Yamaha invited me to the “Share the Vision” event in Barcelona’s Montmeló circuit where everyone got the chance to have contact with the complete motorcycle range and also talk with some major Yamaha personalities. That was very special because it made me feel I was really part of the Yamaha family.”

company was established while YME took back the management of their own European market focussed racing activities. By then YMR had gained good momentum because Rossi had joined the team and was winning races and championship titles. The organisation had relocated to the former Yamaha Superbike Team headquarters in Gerno di Lesmo, close to Monza, in an effort to up their game in terms of real estate. Piece by piece the building was converted into a purpose built and efficient design and in November 2008 the new YMR HQ building was opened. The new base combined team workshops, engine maintenance facilities, engineering, R&D, offices, showrooms and conference rooms in one location. The decision to move headquarters paid off and the professionalism of YMR and its MotoGP team became undeniable. Since 2004 the Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP Team has won a total of seven MotoGP Rider World Titles, including four “Triple Crown” seasons (securing the Rider, Team and Manufacturer titles all in the same year). In 2015, Yamaha Motor Company’s 60th anniversary year, Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team had its most successful season ever and the statistics speak for themselves. Lorenzo and Rossi scored first and second in the MotoGP World Championship after securing 11 wins, 10 double podiums and 27 podium finishes in total (12 from Lorenzo, 15 from Rossi). The Team’s Title was won by Yamaha with 655 points (330 points scored by Lorenzo, 325 points by Rossi) with a 202-point advantage over the closest team and the Manufacturer’s Title was clinched with 407 points (235 points secured by Lorenzo, 152 points by Rossi, and 20 points by Monster Yamaha Tech’s Bradley Smith) with a 52-point margin.
TRIPLE TITLE TRIUMPH The Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team and its riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo have millions of fans all over the world. At every Grand Prix the stands are filled with yellow, blue and black shirts from the fans that come to cheer them on, but how much do these fans really know of Yamaha’s full-factory MotoGP team? Originally Grand Prix Road Racing was made up by factory-supported teams that were often run by ex-riders. It wasn’t until after Wayne

Rainey retired from his leading role that Yamaha’s full-factory in-house Grand Prix Road Racing team was founded in 1999. This change signalled the start of a new company - Yamaha Motor Racing B.V.. (YMR), completely owned by Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. YMR was originally based in the Netherlands within the Yamaha Motor Europe (YME) building with the 500cc Grand Prix Team’s workshops being just a couple of kilometres away in
Aalsmeer. Shortly after its conception YMR’s activities expanded to include the management of all YME’s racing activities as well as Yamaha Motor Company’s Road Racing GP endeavours. This proceeded for more than four years but, as the all-new four-stroke MotoGP programme took on an increasing significance for Yamaha, YMR went on to focus 100 per cent on MotoGP. In December 2004 YMR moved its complete operations to Italy where a new YMR S.r.l.
In the same spirit it is important to give credit where credit is due. It weren’t only the riders, the YMR mechanics, and the YMC engineers that helped Yamaha clinch the Triple Crown for the first time since 2010; a world championship can only be won when you leave nothing to chance and let nothing slip. This means that every one involved has to be the best person for the job and needs to be in the right place at the right time and fully dedicated. This not only goes for the YMR and Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team staff, it includes all of the essential sponsors and partners and suppliers too. 2015 was a year in which everybody excelled themselves and so the Triple Crown is dedicated to everyone who played their part to the best of their abilities, whether as a rider, team manager, engineer, sponsor, partner or fan. We can proudly say that we did it together, it was a team effort, the Yamaha family won.

Along the way, various records were also broken. Lorenzo won four consecutive Grands Prix; leading from start to finish to break Casey Stoner’s record for most consecutive laps led. Rossi finished in the top three at the first twelve races of the year for the first time since 2003. Yamaha also secured eleven race wins in one year, equalling the biggest number of premier-class Grand Prix wins they have achieved in a single season in both 2010 and 2005. These are massive achievements, but they would be meaningless without recognition from the supporters. Celebrating race victories and championships with trophies and champagne is all very well, but the most rewarding aspect is when you see the appreciation of the fans, dealers and sponsors, who constantly stand behind Yamaha as an extension of the MotoGP team.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE TEAM Marketing Department as Marketing Coordinator and became responsible for the planning and organisation of the new model introductions in the Powered Two Wheelers division.
IT’S BEEN SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN: MOTORSPORT IS KNOWN AS A MALE-DOMINATED SECTOR BUT IS IT TRUE? NOT ACCORDING TO US.
“It was in those years that the love for motorcycles got a real, big grasp on me and I decided to get my riding license”, she shares, but it was only a matter of time before the ‘travel-itch’ would play up again. After eight years on the commercial side of the business, it was time for a change and in 2013 she went back to MotoGP to work in the Yamaha Factory Racing Team as Race Event Coordinator at first and later on as Marketing Coordinator.
Women are increasingly filling high-profile functions within racing organisations and we felt it’s time to introduce the world to one of our heroines. Yamaha Motor Racing’s Marketing Coordinator Raffaella Pasquino is one of Yamaha’s leading ladies. While the male employees of the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team perform their duties on the field of honour that is the pit box and the track, she takes care of business behind the scenes. “It’s not so easy to describe in a nutshell what I do as I am involved in many varied and different activities”, says Raffaella to us after the end of the 2015 MotoGP season. ”My responsibilities range from keeping daily contact with our sponsors and partners to help them promote their sponsorship marketing activations, to preparing the planning, coordination and execution of all team events, both on and off the track.” Her work situation seems perfect for many racefans; it brings her as close to the MotoGP racing action as possible, but this was not her main driving force.

Yet, much like during her job hours, she spends part of her ‘down-time’ in a foreign country, giving to others and making sure they have big smiles on their faces. “Every Christmas I go for a couple of weeks to visit my mother who lives in Kenya and since the last few years I have been taking old team uniforms to the local villagers. Everything is needed there so the used team clothing is really appreciated. Team members know this little project of mine so every season many of them hand me their old uniforms and shoes so I can take them with me. Last year we managed to dress up the boys of a local football club who for the first time looked like a real team.”
The job comes with wonderful perks and forms a great challenge, but it’s not without its trials. “The

”It all started with the fact I loved to travel. Right after high school I decided to leave my native country (Italy) and head to the United States to pursue my university degree. With my communications degree in the pocket, I moved to Amsterdam and got my first job at an Internet startup company as communications and events assistant.” In 2001 she joined Yamaha Motor Racing (YMR) as a Management Assistant. At the time YMR was managing all racing activities for Yamaha; from MotoGP to Superbike and Motocross, giving Raffaella her first involvement with racing. However, her love for motorcycles didn’t catch flame until five years later in 2005 when she was offered the opportunity to join the Yamaha Motor Europe
