ZeroUNO DAC Driver Installation for Windows Users INTRODUCTION CHAPTER 1 DAC never connected to the computer before CHAPTER 2 DAC was connected to the computer before to run the installation program CHAPTER 3 Computer Status after a valid installation CHAPTER 4 How to uninstall the driver INTRODUCTION The XMOS USB Audio firmware supports USB Audio Class 2.0. operation. A USB Audio Class 2.0 host is preferred because of its extended feature set and use of USB 2.0. Mac OS, iOS or Linux based system do not need to install any driver because they are already USB Audio Class 2.0 ready. Windows only provides support for USB Audio Class 1.0. To use a USB Audio Class 2.0 device under Windows requires a driver. Below is described the installation of the driver for Windows users. It is explained step by step and it is focused for newbies. The installation procedure is exactly the same you have when you connect a new peripheral to your computer and the driver comes with the unit to install. After the installation of the driver, Windows, Mac OS or Linux based systems offers exactly the same performances. Windows only, after the installation, offers ASIO, WASAPI, Kernel Streaming, Direct Sound and WaveOut. You can chose the best for you. Mac OS or Linux doesn’t let you chose the way out and the solution offered is the same of ASIO for Windows.. To receive the driver send an email to [email protected] If you are the owner of the ZeroUno DAC you will receive immediately after the file XMOSStereo-USB-Audio-Class2-Driver.exe Do not plug the dac to the computer until the installation program will prompt you. If for any reason you have connected before read this installation procedure nothing is compromised. Read the chapter 2. CHAPTER 1 DAC never connected to the computer before Run XMOS-Stereo-USB-AudioClass2-Driver.exe double clicking on its name. A welcome window will popup. It is a good rule to close all the applications, mainly those dedicated to audio applications. If you don’t do, probably, at the end of the installation you have to close an restart the application the let them work with the driver installed. Click on Next to move to the next step. The DAC must be connected to the computer. Click to NEXT to move forward. If the same window of before appears take note on what is written in the window itself. If the DAC has already connected before to launch the driver setup, as written in the window before, unplug and replug it. Click to next to move on. The License Agreement will appear. Click on the “I accept the terms of the …..” and then Next The installation procedure now starts automatically. Meanwhile, and only to exaplain what is going on, take a look to the right bottom of your computer monitor …... … you will see a “Device Setup” running in the background, with the task bar becoming green. It is Windows System that is installing the driver. Now the installation program prompts you the location where you want to copy all the files regarding the driver itself. A default location is suggested by the installation program. There is no need to change it. Anyway you can choose any destination if you would like to change. Change it only if you are a Windows expert user. Click to Install to go on. Installation will start automatically and it will take some minutes. Meanwhile do not power off the computer and do not disconnect the DAC from the computer. Let the computer do its job. Be patient. If you power off or you disconnect the DAC before the end of the installation you have to start again since the beginning. When finished the message below will appear: “ Preinstallation was successful”. Click Next to continue. You are arrived at the end of the process. Chose Finish. Now your system is ready and the DAC is part of your system. CHAPTER 2 DAC was connected to the computer before to run the installation program If you have connected the ZeroUNO DAC to the Windows based computer before reading this installation guide, the ZeroUNO DAC isn’t ready to play. The explanation is described below. You don’t need to read below to solve the matter. Only go back to the CHAPTER 1 a do what’s written step by step. After the steps described the ZeroUNO DAC will be properly installed. An explanation of what Windows have done follows. The target of the below explanation is to introduce you to the interaction between Windows and a driver. You can skip it. If you connected the ZeroUNO DAC to the computer where Windows is running before to run the driver installation program, if you pay attention, you will see in the task bar a program running in the background. If you double click the task bar, over the Device Setup, ….. …. a window like here on the left will appear: Windows is installing the standard driver for the USB unit just detected. The window in the middle will change to the window here in the left. Unfortunately Microsoft Windows doesn’t include the XMOS ASIO and WASAPI driver in its standard drivers. So the driver really installed is a standard USB driver, and it doesn’t do its job. ZeroUNO DAC cannot work. this is confirmed in the Control Panel of your Windows System Double Click on Hardware and Sound setup. Now Double Click on Device manager Paying attention you will see the Sound, videos and game controllers group with the xCORE USB Audio 2.0 forego by an exclamation point. The meaning is the driver installed automatically doesn’t work and the unit is not started. To solve the matter of the wrong driver loaded you have only to follow step by step the CHAPTER 1. Go back to the CHAPTER 1 and do exactly what is written there. CHAPTER 3 Computer Status after a valid installation If you want to check if the driver is properly installed in your Windows system follow the step by step procedure below. Even if you do not check the computer will work fine. Open the Control Panel of your Windows Based system. Double click on “Hardware and Sound” Double Click on “Device Manager” The XMOS XS1-U8 (really the name of the XMOS chip used by ZeroUNO DAC) MFA Stereo (ST) unit appears in 3 different locations: 1 Windows Audio output device. ZeroUNO DAC can be used as output device for all Windows System Sounds. It is – only to explain better an alternative to the speaker installed on the computer itself. 2 Windows Audio output device. ZeroUNO DAC can be used as output device for all Windows System Sounds and Windows Applications 3 This is ASIO unit to let the Computer send the tracks from the Storage Memory (HHD, SSD, Flash …) directly to ZeroUNO DAC do not involve with Windows OS (exact bit transfer). You can check the installed driver Chose the Control Panel, and double click on Programs Now double click on Programs and Features Scroll down till the last software installed Locate the ES9018 USB DAC v2.19.0 ES9018 is the chip name of the SABRE32 As said before, the DAC is seen by Windows as an output device for itself too. If you double click on the speaker icon on the right bottom of the monitor, you can check the active device for the Windows Applications and System sounds. If you double click over the XMOS icon, your Windows default device will be ZeroUNO DAC. The window here on the left reports the configuration of the computer used for testing. TeraDak, Apowersoft and Raltek are the Input&Output units active on the computer used to write this documentation. 99.9% you will have another report BUT the XMOS XS1-U8 MFA (ST): that unit muts be present in your System too. For example, if you set as default device the XMOS XS-1, and if by your browser you connect to a web radio, when you play the active program, the music program is sent to ZeroUNO DAC. Please refer to the documentation of the Music Players installed for the best way to set the output device. ASIO, WASAPI, Kernel Streaming, DirectSound or WaveOut are not possible to set in all the Music Players. CHAPTER 4 How to uninstall the driver When you install an updated version of the driver it is a good policy to uninstall the old one. This avoid any confusion between old and new thing installed.
